On The Way 5 (Thesis Project)

I have to make things in a whole set. I was thinking to have neon light signboards for my title design, so it conveys a better idea to audience in the degree show.

And so, i asked around. i found a signboard shop, i was excited when the boss told me: ya, we can make it!’

Image‘How much for few words? like 8-10 words? and this size?’

‘RM 2000+, because this is neon, the material cost is high and its not easy to make. I can suggest you another type which is called ‘backlit’, it costs only RM200+!’

It’s too expensive for a student to afford it. The boss was being helpful, i appreciate his kindness. He was curious why graphic design students need all these, i told him it was for exhibition purpose. Now i know it’s really not easy to have an exhibition, there are many details to deal with.

Afterwards, i google ‘backlit’, it is actually something like this.

This is quite far from what i expected. And thus, i decided to give up this idea, and then looking for another alternative way.

At the same time, i start doing the light painting. It is tough to draw the whole scene in one shot, thus i paint it part by part, it somehow pushes my work to another layer of meaning since digital information are in scattered pieces.

I actually kind of enjoy the process, it’s like dancing in the dark and i was sweating after the light painting session. As a visual communicator, i think it is nice to stay away from tablet and photoshop sometimes, and explore the possibility of other visual language.
